Players of the D’Tigress of Nigeria have made history by writing their name in gold.

The nation’s Senior Female Basketball Team has booked a place in the Quarter Finals of the Basketball Tournament at the World’s global fiesta by defeating Canada 79-70 in their final group match of the Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

This victory marked a significant milestone as it secured D’Tigress’s first-ever appearance in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games, making them the first African team, male or female, to achieve this feat.

The game took place at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille, France. The contest was fiercely competitive from the outset.

In the first quarter, both teams showcased their skills and determination, resulting in a tie at 18 points each. However, Canada gained an edge in the second quarter, outscoring Nigeria 23-19 and leading at halftime with a score of 41-37.

The third quarter proved to be pivotal for D’Tigress. Under the leadership of head coach Rena Wakama and fueled by a strong performance from point guard Ezinne Kalu—who scored a game-high 21 points—the Nigerian team launched an impressive offensive surge. They began this quarter with an explosive 11-0 run that shifted momentum firmly in their favor. By the end of the third quarter, Nigeria had outscored Canada dramatically, finishing that period with a score of 23-5.

Despite Canada’s attempts to rally back in the fourth quarter—where they managed to win that segment 24-19—it was not enough to overcome Nigeria’s substantial lead established earlier. The D’Tigress held on to secure a historic victory with a final score of 79-70.

This win not only highlighted Nigeria’s resilience after previously losing to France but also underscored their capability as formidable competitors on an international stage.

The D’Tigress had earlier defeated World Number Three, Australia,  in their first group match.

With this achievement, D’Tigress has set a new benchmark for African women’s basketball and has inspired future generations of athletes across the continent.

Protesters in Kano

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Kano State Government has announced a slight adjustment in the curfew imposed on the State.

The Source reports that the  State Governor, Abba Yusuf had, in the wake of the arson, looting and violence that trailed the day one of the EndBadGovernance Nationwide protest in the commercial city, imposed a 24-hour curfew to contain the situation.

The Nationwide protest which kick-started on August 1 across the country was marred by wanton destruction, vandalization, arson and deaths in Kano, making it the most negatively affected in the whole country.

Many public and private institutions and businesses were massively looted and vandalized by hoodlums who hijacked the protest.

But in a statement on Sunday August 4, the State Commissioner for Information, Baba Haliru Dantiye said the curfew will now run from 2.00pm to 8.00am

The Commissioner cited the need to return normalcy to the embattled City as reason.

Similarly, Yobe State, another victim of the hijacking of the protest, has relaxed its 24 hour curfew.

The State, like Kano, witnessed mindless destruction, looting, arson and deaths during the day one of the protest.

The development forced the authorities to slam 24-hour curfew in parts of the State,.

Governor Mala Buni has, however, announced a five hour relaxation of the curfew.  Residents are now allowed to conduct their activities from 12 noon to 5 pm .

He lauded security agencies for their commitment and dedication in protecting lives and properties of law abiding residents.

Areas mostly affected by the curfew are the commercial town of Potiskum, Gashua and Nguru.

The review of the curfew in the two States comes on the heels of the nationwide broadcast by President Bola Tinubu on the ongoing EndBadGovernance Protest.

The President in his address decried the deaths and violence that were recorded in Kano,Borno and Yobe state .

He appealed for restraint and cessation of hostilities by the protesters to allow for dialogue in the interest of the country.

By Akinwale Kasali

Amb. Dr. John Adekorede Aderibigbe, National Chairman, National Agricultural Commodities Projects, NACP, has applauded President Bola Tinubu for listening to the voice of reasoning by addressing the nation as the #EndBadGovernance Protest escalates.

Aderibigbe said though the President addressed National Issues, but emphasis still must be made in realities as regards price control.

He said that there are no institutions in the country that controlling price of commodities in the formal and informal sectors, stressing that the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, led by Zach Adedeji, urge to be saddled with the responsibility of addressing this.

Speaking further, the NACP Chairman added that in saner climes, the Government supports all Smallholder Farmers feeding the nation, urging the President Tinubu administration to borrow a leaf from this by boosting the Agricultural sector by growing commodity crops, animal husbandry,  aquaculture, fisheries and mechanization.

“Sincerely, we at NACP want to recognize the input of President Tinubu in the Agricultural sector by procuring tractors, lifting of Duty Levies on Agricultural produce, etc

“But emphasis is still on Smallholder Farmers, for them to be engaged in real time food production.

“We at NACP want to recognize his contributions on Real Estate Sector by providing affordable Housing Scheme. We further appeal that the common man in the country should be able to afford these housing schemes for them to have a sense of belonging in his administration. ”

Aderibigbe further stressed that it was necessary for President Tinubu, with a matter of urgency, declared a state of emergency on food production with the Local Government Autonomy verdict by the Supreme Court. President Tinubu should announce food production in NACP’s 774 LGs initiatives Farming Support Schemes in partnership with all microfinance banks, Bank of Agriculture, and Insurance Companies.

Though the President, during his address, said he has been meeting with Governors and key Ministers to accelerate food production, but Aderibigbe stressed that key stakeholders who have been in the cycle and have clouts needs to consulted and integrated into this vision to make food production achievable in the country.

The President had also stated that fertilizers has been distributed to large numbers of farmers, but the NACP Chairman said those put in charge of the distribution of these fertilizers are shortchanging the real Smallholder farmers.

He further added that he hopes that the target of the Federal Government to cultivate more than 10 million hectares of land to grow what we eat, coupled, with the provision of all necessary incentives will get to its target audience.

He, however, appealed to the organizers of the ongoing #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest, urging them to give the President Tinubu a chance by being calm and peaceful and giving room for more negotiation.

“I remain optimistic that the economic fortunes of the nation will witness a wind of change, I plead with aggrieved protesters to rescind their decision and put an end to the protest and give the FG room to put the round peg in the round hole for the betterment of the nation”.

The Governor assured that his administration is committed to strengthening relationship with the Inter-Party Advisory Council in providing purposeful leadership that will shape the policies and programmes of the government in the interest of the people.

He stressed that the era of de marketing the state by political actors should be left in the past and urged political actors to provide positive evaluation of his administration by offering superior options in policies and programmes that will have direct impact on the lives of the people.

“As politicians, it is time to come together to re market the entire state by towing the lane that will lead to its development as demonstrated by the leadership of IPAC.

Soyinka Faults President Tinubu’s Address, Says It Failed To Address Attacks On Protesters By Police

0
Professor Wole Soyinka

By Akinwale Kasali

Professor Wole Soyinka, Nobel Laureate, has faulted President Bola Tinubu for not addressing attacks on #EndBadGovernance protesters by Security Operatives in his nationwide broadcast address Sunday.

The nonagenarian said it was wrong for the protesters to be attacked by Security Agencies while exercising their fundamental human rights as citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, adding that it would have been honourable and worthwhile for the President to have addressed this issue in his speech.

Soyinka said: “I set my alarm clock for this morning to ensure that I did not miss President Bola Tinubu’s impatiently awaited address to the nation on the current unrest across the nation.

“His outline of government’s remedial action since inception, aimed at warding off just such an outbreak, will undoubtedly receive expert and sustained attention both for effectiveness and in content analysis.

“My primary concern, quite predictably, is the continuing deterioration of the State’s seizure of protest management, an area in which the presidential address fell conspicuously short.

“Such short-changing of civic deserving, regrettably, goes to arm the security forces in the exercise of impunity and condemns the nation to a seemingly unbreakable cycle of resentment and reprisals.

“Live bullets, as state response to civic protest – that becomes the core issue. Even tear gas remains questionable in most circumstances, certainly an abuse in situations of clearly peaceful protest. Hunger marches constitute a universal S.O.S, not peculiar to the Nigerian nation. They belong indeed in a class of their own, never mind the collateral claims emblazoned on posters.

“They serve as summons to governance that a breaking point has been reached and thus, a testing ground for governance awareness of public desperation. The tragic response to the ongoing hunger marches in parts of the nation, and for which notice was served, constitutes a retrogression that takes the nation even further back than the deadly culmination of the watershed ENDSARS protests.

“It evokes pre-independence – that is, colonial – acts of disdain, a passage that induced the late stage pioneer Hubert Ogunde’s folk opera BREAD AND BULLETS, earning that nationalist serial persecution and proscription by the colonial government.”

He noted that the “nation’s security agencies cannot pretend unawareness of alternative models for emulation, civilized advances in security intervention”.

And added: “Need we recall the nationwide 2022/23 editions of what is generally known as the YELLOW VEST movement in France? Perhaps it is time to make such scenarios compulsory viewing in policing curriculum. In all of the coverage that I watched, I did not catch one single instance of a gun leveled at protesters, much less fired at them even during direct physical confrontations.

“The serving of bullets where bread is pleaded is ominous retrogression, and we know what that eventually proves – a prelude to far more desperate upheavals, not excluding revolutions.

“The time is long overdue, surely, to abandon, permanently, the anachronistic resort to lethal means by the security agencies of governance. No nation is so under-developed, materially impoverished, or simply internally insecure as to lack the will to set an example. All it takes is to recall its own history, then exercise the will to commence a lasting transformation, inserting a break in the chain of lethal responses against civic society.

“Today’s marchers may wish to consider adopting the key songs of Hubert Ogunde’s BREAD AND BULLETS, if only to inculcate a sense of shame in the continuing failure to transcend the lure of colonial inheritance where we all were at the receiving end. One way or the other, this vicious cycle must be broken”, he stated.

Churches Looted in Katsina

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The Katsina State Police authorities have said they are currently conducting an investigation to unmask more hoodlums that allegedly vandalized and looted the Living Faith Church a.k.a Winners Chapel and the Deeper Life Bible Church during the ongoing EndBadGovernance protest in the State.

This is just as Pastor Emmanuel Micah Yakusa, the Overseer of the looted Living Faith expressed dismay over the decision of the protesters to vent their spleen on a place of Worship.

Speaking on Sunday August 4, 2024, Pastor Yakusa said some protesters had stormed the Church Thursday night, carting away about 205 chairs, musical instruments and other church valuables worth millions of Naira .

The Source reports that the ongoing EndBadGovernance protest on day one was hugely marred by large scale looting, vandalization and arson in most States in the North West region.

Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna Katsina, and Jigawa recorded high rates of looting and vandalization of both private and public facilities, particularly on day one ( Thursday August1) .

Following the looting, the Living Faith Pastor informed that Sunday Church service was conducted under heavy security presence.

According to him, the hoodlums who also vandalized the Church auditorium and the Administration section housing the Accountant’s  office, came in their numbers riding in tricycles.

Before gaining entrance in to the church, the hoodlums were said to have  broken the doors and windows.

“They packed everything inside the Church auditorium, including the wall clock, musical instruments, pulpit, plastic chairs and computer sets”, Pastor Yakusa noted.

Although, the protesters turned looters had earmarked about three Churches for raiding, they only had their way with two -Winners Chapel and Deeper Life.

Deeper Life was said to have suffered the same looting spree as the Winners Chapel.

But their efforts to penetrate the Anglican Church, the third target was unsuccessful

Pastor Yakusa, noted that the development portends a threat to the collective agitation for good governance in the country.

He regretted that the hoodlums could target places of worship when it is clear to all that food items are not stored in Churches.

He however, announced that the case has been reported to the appropriate authorities.

The Spokesperson for the Katsina State Police Command, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, also informed that arrests have been made concerning the incident.

The Police authorities, he stated, are determined to get to the root of the matter.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi

By Ayodele Oni

The Nigeria Police Force, (NPF), has cautioned Amnesty International, (AI) over release of unconfirmed figure of casualties in the ongoing nationwide protest.

Force spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi also accused the international agency of blaming security agents for the death of some of the protesters.

In a statement, Adejobi stated that

“The Nigeria Police Force finds it necessary to refute a recent report publicized by Amnesty International, which claims that 13 individuals have lost their lives due to the protests in Nigeria that began on 1st August 2024.

“Amnesty International further alleges that security personnel deliberately employed tactics designed to kill while managing gatherings and used firearms as a tactical tool for protest management.

“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to provide an accurate account of incidents from the first two days of the nationwide protests.

“In Borno State, four  individuals lost their lives and thirty-four  were severely injured in a terrorist attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP elements who infiltrated the crowd of protesters and detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

“Additionally, an incident occurred involving an unregistered Honda Prelude car that ran into the protesters, resulting in the deaths of two  civilians.

“The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Although the vehicle was vandalized after the incident, it has been recovered and is currently in police custody.

Efforts are ongoing to trace the driver and bring him to justice.

“There was another incident reported in Yauri, in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State where a group of individuals mobilized to loot a shop.

“In the process, a local vigilante man shot and killed one of the looters. The Commissioner of Police in charge of Kebbi State is currently investigating the incident.

This brings the total number of deaths recorded during the protests to seven.

“It is important to state that there were no other recorded fatalities during the protests apart from those mentioned above.

“However, incidences of armed robbery, arson, mischief, looting of public institutions and private businesses, destructions of both public and private property were recorded during the protest.

“Arrests were made with respect to these criminal incidences and a number of recoveries made from the suspects while the protest was going on.

“The Nigeria Police personnel deployed to manage the protests have acted professionally, refraining from using lethal weapons.

“In instances where protesters became riotous, the police employed teargas to disperse them. Even when our officers on lawful duty were attacked and injured, the police effected arrests using only teargas, demonstrating utmost restraint.

“In an effort to combat the trend of crimes and criminality, the police have arrested a total of 681 individuals who committed various criminal offenses such as armed robbery, arson, mischief, and destructions of both public and private property.

“Dangerous weapons, including two  AK-47 rifles and assorted live ammunition, were recovered from the so-called protesters.

“Additionally, stolen items such as furniture, electronics, phones, other various shop items, and vital infrastructures worth billions of naira were recovered from the arrested persons.

“Contrary to circulating news, organizers of the protest or protesters were not arrested. Those in police custody are under investigation for clear connections to criminal activities.

“Furthermore, nine police officers sustained various degrees of injuries during attacks by protesters. One of them who initially was reported dead, miraculously survived but remains in critical condition.”

President Tinubu’s Broadcast: Nigerians Task Governors To Account For Funds From FG, Say Speech Did Not Address Main Issue

0
Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President

By Ayodele Oni

Nigerians have been reacting to Sunday morning broadcast by President Bola Tinubu over the current nationwide protest.

The president had highlighted various efforts by the administration to cushion the biting hardship occasioned by high cost of goods and services.

In the broadcast, Tinubu also disclosed the federal government release of funds to states as part of efforts to cushion the economic hardship, which is a fallout of subsidy withdrawal on petrol.

The president stated that “more than N570 billion has been released to the 36 states to expand livelihood support for their citizens, while 600,000 nano-businesses have benefitted from our nano-grants. An additional 400,000 more nano-businesses are expected to benefit.”

Reacting to funds accusing to states, one  Olawale Kadri wrote on a social media platform that  “H.E Biodun Oyebanji, How much did Ekiti got from this exclusive livelihood support for citizens and how was it spent?

“Akin Oyebode HC Finance sir, since Mr Governor might be too busy with state matters, kindly tell us how much the state got from this N570 Billion and how was it spent to support EKITI citizens livelihood.

“Still in the spirit of National Protest, let’s share this to ask our governors how they spent this money. If you are not from Ekiti State, mention your Governor and HC Finance to ask them questions.

“If Nigeria must get better, citizens must start asking the right questions from the right people.”

In his comment Prof Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr.,

Convener Country first Movement, wrote “Mr. President’s speech this morning was a flaccid and an uneventful dance around the issues that brought us to the nadir. He sought to validate the policies that traumatize the people.

“He sought to decree an end to the protests without addressing the issues. Without making concrete promises. Without announcing some far-reaching Reforms.

“And without saying a thing about cutting the cost of governance, and cutting wastage, wanderlust and profligacy.

“The person who wrote that speech maybe utterly wicked, mischievous and treacherous, because I do not believe that such is the mind of Mr. President. But what do I know?

“So after 3 days of protestation, all the President can say is that he is doing well, and that we must be patient? Who has bewitched our President, who are those telling him that the young people are mad trouble shooters?

“Who are those telling him that the young people are being manipulated by political agents and opponents of his? Who are those taking him away from the sad reality, and the ominous tide in the land?

One Ogunyinka reacted “Reading through his speech, it is the same old story, of promises, since day one. The main hopeful game changer is the expected rearing into life of Dangote’s Refinery’s pms, which will relieve pressure on the forex and reduce pms prices.

“It will take Nigerians longer days or even years, to recover from the economic dislocation foisted upon them, via Tinubu’s slavish and irrational adoption of Bretton Woods institutions’ prescribed medication. We never recovered from Babangida’s IMF induced SAP.

“Tinubu will not announce any reduction in PMS price, because, despite his ‘subsidy is gone’ pronouncement, PMS is currently made available at a serious level of burden to the federation via NNPCL.

“Tinubu met a deficit economy that was to collapse within three months. This is the usual laughable narrative. They told us that our economy would have collapsed if Buhari had not come. Nonsensical stories.”

Again Gunmen Storm Imo Community, Wipe Out Entire Leadership

Aboki Danjuma - Imo Commissioner of Police
Aboki Danjuma, Imo state Commissioner of Police

By Suleiman Anyalewechi

The siege on some parts of Imo state by gunmen in the last one week has continued unabated.

Early Saturday night, August 3, 2024, the sleepy  town of Umucheke Okwe in Onuimo local council was yet another scene of horrendous killings.

In one swoop, seven persons, including the President General of the Community, Hyginus Ohazuruke, were felled by some yet to be identified gunmen.

The attackers, according to eye witnesses, stormed the business premises of the President General, where he was holding a meeting with six other community leaders, gunned down all the leaders at the meeting and fled in their operational vehicle. They also set ablaze the business premises.

The unfortunate incident  comes on the heels of a similar coordinated attacks on some major areas around, and within the Owerri metropolis, on Wednesday July 31.

Wednesday’s attack targeted residents of Okigwe road ,Douglas Road ,Imo state university junction and adjourning streets.

Although, no lives were lost, but the affected areas witnessed massive disruption of business activities, as well as destruction of properties.

Two days earlier, on Monday July 29, some unknown gunmen had killed four police operatives and a civilian along the ever busy Owerri/Onitsha Road.

In Saturday’s attack ,an eye witness said the gunmen after killing their victims set ablaze the president General’s business premises, venue of the community meeting.

“The gunmen arrived and opened fire, killed the President General, and six Village Heads .They set the scene ablaze. All the community leaders present at the meeting were killed in the attack.

“No one is aware of the agenda of the meeting.

The gunmen just arrived opened fire, killed the Village chiefs, set the place ablaze and fled”, a witness volunteered.

Attempts to get the reaction of the Imo State Police Command as at the time of reporting Sunday morning were unsuccessful.

Several calls put across to the Command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, could not get through.

However, while speaking on Wednesday’s Okoye had blamed the incident on members of the Indigenous peoples of Biafra IPOB and its armed wing ,the Eastern Security Network ESN.

He described them as cowards who have decided to adopt a guerilla mode of  operation.

” They are pure cowards .The criminals suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN adopted a guerilla-like strategy where they come out from their enclaves, unleash a surprise attack and go back into hiding.

However, concerted efforts are underway by security agencies to apprehend them.

The Commissioner of Police has personally led men to the scene. The Command is on top of the situation. We will get the miscreants responsible for the senseless attacks. either dead or alive” the Police spokesman had said.

The Source reports that the Simon Ekpa led faction of IPOB had declared a week- long sit-at-home order in the South East region which commenced on July 29 same day of the Owerri attacks.

Similarly, the Umuocheke attack coincided with the Saturday’s August 3 dateline for the one week sit-at-home order.

The Source findings have revealed that ,the killing of the seven community leaders may not be divorced from the activities of the Ekpa-led Autopilots militia.

The Autopilots is the faction’s recognized arm for the enforcement of sit-at-home in the South East .

A source revealed to this Magazine that the fate that befell the seven Community Leaders might not be unconnected with their perceived roles as, alleged, informants to both the Police and Imo state authorities on the activities of the autopilots.

According to the source, the only reason why a whole community leadership will be wiped out by the gunmen is, perhaps their collaborative efforts with the authorities to fight crime.

Meanwhile, most of the residents are said to have fled their homes as a result of the Saturday’s attack .

But the Sole Administrator of Onuimo Local Government, Emeka, who also confirmed the sad incident has sued for calm among the residents.

The Imo State  Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has assured that no stone will be left unturned to unmask the perpetrators of the gruesome killings of the eight community leaders.

This is even as he commiserated with the families and entire Community over  the dastardly act.

In a statement issued  Sunday afternoon, the Command blamed the killings on suspected members of the Indigenous peoples of Biafra, IPOB .

“Today,04/08/2024 ,the Commissioner of Police, Imo state Command ,CP Aboki Danjuma, together with the Sole Administrator of Onuimo LGA, Dr Emeka Obi, representative of the Commander 34 Artillery Brigade Major A L Maikarfi, Commandant NSCDC Comfy Mathew Ovye and other security agencies visited Umucheke Community in Onuimo LGA for on the spot assessment of the tragic incident that claimed the lives of over 8 members of Eze Umucheke Cabinet yesterday (Saturday) who were gruesomely murdered by hoodlums suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN

“The CP commiserated with the families of the bereaved and the entire community members over the unfortunate death of their loved ones and assured that security agencies in the state are working in synergy to apprehend the miscreants responsible for the dastardly act and make them face the full wrath of the law” the statement by the Command’s Spokesperson, Henry Okoye noted.
