he 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to return to Nigeria to tackle the security problems facing the country.
The key opposition leader made the remark on Wednesday on his verified X account, saying the continued absence of the president from the country does not bode well, Tinubu must shelve his trip immediately, he said.
Obi’s remark comes on the heels of the killings in some parts of the country, including Plateau and Benue by suspected Fulani herdsmen, where many people have now been displaced from their homes with serious humanitarian problems left in the wake of the sporadic attacks by the criminals on the communities.
According to Obi, the number of those killed has risen to over 150 since President Tinubu left the country for France, saying he should return immediately to tackle the insecurity problems because that is his ‘primary duty’ as the commander-in chief, adding that Tinubu must be ready to provide the leadership that the country deserves.
Obi: “Mr. President, domestic problems beckon.
“In the two weeks you’ve been away, over 150 Nigerians have lost their lives to insecurity across the country.
“The primary duty of any government is the protection of lives and property.
“The President must return and take full responsibility — that is the new Nigeria citizens deserve.”
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategy on April 5, Tinubu left the country for France on a ‘private visit’.
The terse statement: “ President Tinubu Bola will depart Abuja on Wednesday for Paris, France, on a private visit en route to Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.
“In Addis Ababa, President Tinubu will join African leaders at the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU Heads of State, scheduled from February 12th to 16th, 2025.
“The president will arrive in Addis Ababa early next week for the African Union summit.
“While in France, President Tinubu will meet with his French counterpart, President Emmanuel Macron.”
Not a few Nigerians have trenchantly criticised the president for embarking on frequent travels abroad either for private or medical reasons, since he came to office in 2023.
