Amidst speculations over his political future, Kenneth Okonkwo, a former spokesman for the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has given an indication of where he’s headed.
For the ex-ally of the LP presidential candidate, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP may be his next destination following his meeting with Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate in 2023.
Recall that the nollywood actor-turned politician had in the past vowed no to have anything to do with the PDP, promising to stick with LP and Obi, it appears the Anambra-born actor is now open to any political move or re-alignment with the opposition.
In a post he shared on his verified instagram account, on Sunday, the legal practitioner announced that he met Abubakar, a former Vice President of Nigeria, following an invitation from him, saying their meeting focused on how to ‘chart a new’ course for Nigeria.
According to him, the current situation in the country requires that key political leaders in the country come together to put the nation back on the path of progress and development.
Okonkwo: “It’s a privilege and honour to be invited by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar for a consultative meeting on how best to chart a new course for our beloved country.
“The situation in Nigeria today requires the cooperation of every well-meaning Nigerian to ensure that our country is restored to its path of greatness.”
On February 11, 2025, Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, LPPCO, announced his resignation from his former party, saying he was not ready to waste his time in the party that’s not prepared for the next Nigerian election in 2027.
He had earlier criticised his principal, Obi for not taking decisive steps to end the crisis in LP.
He said, “My entrance to politics is for good governance, and I will continue to work for it to ensure that Nigeria becomes a great country of incorruptible men.Catch You By Surprise00 / 0:00
“This aim can no longer be realised within Labour Party as presently constituted.
“Since the party is non-existent as presently constituted, I am constrained to resign my membership of the party.
“To all Nigerians of goodwill who supported us when we needed them most, I pledge my continued loyalty to the Nigerian people in all I will decide to do in my political future.”
