“Baba-Ahmed: I ran for the Presidential seat long before Peter Obi did”
A challenge for the Presidential seat has come the way of Peter Obi from a most unexpected quarters.
Obi’s Presidential running mate in the 2023 General Elections, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has declared his ambition to the office of the President.
He will contest under the Labour Party, LP, the Party under which both of them contested in 2023.
Baba-Ahmed made public his ambition at a rally on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
Baba-Ahmed’s suprise declaration comes one week after Obi exited the LP for the African Democratic Congress, ADC, the Party under which he has declared interest for the top job.
Baba-Ahmed, speaking to party members and supporters, said his aspiration was neither “reactionary nor dependent on Obi’s political decisions.” He added that his presidential ambition predates the 2023 General Election.
He said: “I have made myself available to contest for the office in 2027. I’m not following anybody’s trajectory or stepping into anybody’s shoes.
“Can I please remind you that before His Excellency Governor Peter Obi filed for the Presidency, I aspired for the Presidency before him? The records are there for you to see.”
It will be interesting how Obi and Baba-Ahmed will square up during the campaigns if both clinches the ticket of their respective political parties.
