Players of the D’Tigress of Nigeria have made history by writing their name in gold.
The nation’s Senior Female Basketball Team has booked a place in the Quarter Finals of the Basketball Tournament at the World’s global fiesta by defeating Canada 79-70 in their final group match of the Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
This victory marked a significant milestone as it secured D’Tigress’s first-ever appearance in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games, making them the first African team, male or female, to achieve this feat.
The game took place at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille, France. The contest was fiercely competitive from the outset.
In the first quarter, both teams showcased their skills and determination, resulting in a tie at 18 points each. However, Canada gained an edge in the second quarter, outscoring Nigeria 23-19 and leading at halftime with a score of 41-37.
The third quarter proved to be pivotal for D’Tigress. Under the leadership of head coach Rena Wakama and fueled by a strong performance from point guard Ezinne Kalu—who scored a game-high 21 points—the Nigerian team launched an impressive offensive surge. They began this quarter with an explosive 11-0 run that shifted momentum firmly in their favor. By the end of the third quarter, Nigeria had outscored Canada dramatically, finishing that period with a score of 23-5.
Despite Canada’s attempts to rally back in the fourth quarter—where they managed to win that segment 24-19—it was not enough to overcome Nigeria’s substantial lead established earlier. The D’Tigress held on to secure a historic victory with a final score of 79-70.
This win not only highlighted Nigeria’s resilience after previously losing to France but also underscored their capability as formidable competitors on an international stage.
The D’Tigress had earlier defeated World Number Three, Australia, in their first group match.
With this achievement, D’Tigress has set a new benchmark for African women’s basketball and has inspired future generations of athletes across the continent.
