The long-serving Archbishop of the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese, His Grace Archbishop Anthony Obinna, has retired. A native of Emekuku, Owerri North, Imo State, Obinna has held the position since 1994.
Appointed to replace Obinna is the Archbishop of Umuahia, His Grace Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji.
His Holiness, Pope Francis, approved Obinna’s voluntary retirement as the Archbishop of Owerri.
The Papal Nuncio conveyed the news of both the retirement of Obinna, and the appointment of Ugorji at the ongoing First 2022 Catholic Bishops Conference Of Nigeria ( CBCN) Plenary, at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Abuja.
Archbishop Ugorji, a native of Naze, Owerri North, Imo State, was born on January 13, 1952. He was ordained a Priest on April 16, 1977, appointed a Bishop on April 2, 1990, and ordained the Bishop of Umuahia on July 1, 1990. He was, also, at the height of the Ahiara, Mbaise, Catholic Diocese crisis, appointed, the Administrator.
