Police in Osun State have deployed personnel to Ido Ajegunle in Obokun Local Government Area following a violent clash over a chieftaincy dispute.
The dispute in the community has reportedly left one person, identified as Clement Ajayi, dead, while several others sustained gunshot injuries.
The conflict erupted following Governor Ademola Adeleke’s appointment of Prince Timileyin Ajayi as the Olojudo of Ido Ajegunle, a neighbouring community to Esa-Oke.
However, residents reportedly opposed the appointment, arguing that the newly installed Monarch is an indigene of Ilesa, whereas the town is a distinct entity from Esa-Oke.
Those that spoke disclosed that tension escalated when vigilantes allegedly brought in by the new Monarch were arrested by the Police four days ago.
Tensions escalated on Monday, leading to a violent confrontation. According to sources, suspected hoodlums, allegedly disguised as Security Operatives, opened fire on residents, resulting in casualties.
The violence has spread among residents, forcing many to flee for safety.
Meanwhile, students of Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, have been placed on high alert as tension extend to neighboring communities.
Community leaders and residents have urged the state government to intervene urgently to prevent further violence.
When contacted, the spokesperson of Osun State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola said: “We have deployed our men to the community.”
