Despite being on suspension, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW), took the law into their hands as they shut down Akure, Ondo State capital on Tuesday.
The State Government had, last week, clamped down on the driver’s with two weeks suspension, announced by an Aide of the Governor, Mr Doyin Odebowale.
However, on Tuesday, two factions, slugging it out over leadership positions of the union and management of parks, resumed the fight, leading to the death of one of them simply identified as Shina.
Shina was allegedly shot during the fight which broke out between the two factions.
Major streets in the state capital were deserted as the NURTW members embarked on sporadic shootings, forcing the major Oba market to be hurriedly closed.
Tuesday’s clash was said to be the continuation of Monday’s incident during which several persons were reportedly wounded.
Efforts were being made by security agents to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
Following the development, the state government has restated its earlier decision to suspend the union’s activities throughout the state.
Odebowale said in Akure that government would deal decisively with erring members of NURTW found to be formenting trouble.
