President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should consult former President Goodluck Jonathan on how to tackle the economic problems in the country because he is bereft of ideas on how to turn the situation around.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP gave the advise to the president while speaking to The Punch on Sunday, as the country continues to face unprecedented economic crisis.

The prices of essential goods and services have shot up in the last few months, throwing many families into  deeper poverty, and making life unbearable for them, critics of the government said.

Not a few Nigerians have blamed the administration of President Tinubu for the hardship, citing for instance, the unfriendly policies adopted by his government since coming to power on May 29, 2023.

Such policies, analysts say, include the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of naira. The government has also hiked electricity tariff, and is planning to increase the value Added Tax, VAT to the dismay of many Nigerians.

Some of these policies were carried out, critics of the administration say, without robust consultation with major stakeholders.

The administration however said it’s working in the interest of Nigerian, saying it’s a matter of time before things get better in the country.

Speaking yesterday, Dipo Olaoyoku, NNPP Secretary General, said the president is confused on how to move the country forward, Tinubu should consult with Nigeria’s former leaders, particularly former President Jonathan on how to tackle the current economic challenges.

For instance, the former president was able to tackle the problems in the oil and gas sector of the economy without the incessant price hike in the pump prime of petrol, Olayoku said, adding that the Naira exchange rate to the dollar was N200 under the administration of President Jonathan.

He said Nigerians are facing the worst time in their lives due to the administration failure to find lasting solutions to the sufferings in the country, stressing that families are “facing catastrophic hardships under this government.”

Olayoku: “This government is bereft of ideas. Unfortunately, if you look at the people he has appointed to key positions, you won’t find a competent one among them.
