Ranking Senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe has distanced himself from a weird story which made rounds Friday that he disrupted Senate proceedings to protest the non-release, till date, of detained Leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The viral story said that Abaribe, APGA, Abia South Senatorial Zone, stormed the Senate complex,  a placard in hand, blocked the entrance to the Chambers, and swore he was not going to make way, or allow Senate proceedings until detained Kanu is released.

A simple interrogation of the story gave it out as fake, but the masses already believed it and Abaribe thought it wise to issue a statement which dismissed the story as utter rubbish and a lie from the pit of hell.

A statement signed by his Media Aide, Uchenna Awom, disclosed that not only was Abaribe not in Abuja on Friday, the Senate does not seat on Fridays, and Kanu’s case is sub judice.

The Senator said that the motive of whoever fabricated and planted the story on Social Media handles was to destroy to quiet, underground moves aimed at finding an amicable solution to the Kanu issue.

Following is the full text of Abaribe’s statement dated 14, March, 2025.

“DISCARD AS FALSE REPORT OF SENATOR ABARIBE DISRUPTING SENATE PLENARY FOR KANU

“The office of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has been drawn to a false and very misleading report purporting disruption of Senate Plenary by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe demanding the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu.

“The report is false and was at best a concoction that defies logic.

“It was a deliberate misinformation that tends to narrate a sinister motive aimed at sabotaging the ongoing effort at exploring political solution to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“For the avoidance of  doubt, Distinguished Senator Abaribe was last seen on the Senate floor last Wednesday and travelled out of Abuja on Thursday for an oversight function in Ikwuano Umuahia, Abia State, organised by the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

“In any case, the Senate does not sit on Fridays – It  conducts its plenary sessions from Tuesdays to Thursdays, making the claim of a shutdown on a Friday baseless.

“2. Matters that are sub judice (under judicial consideration) are not debated in the Senate – The case of Nnamdi Kanu is currently before the courts, and as a rule, the National Assembly does not interfere in judicial proceedings.

“Therefore, Senator Abaribe couldn’t have embarked on such effort knowing it’s futility.

“The truth is that Distinguished Senator Enyi Abaribe did not lead any protest or obstructed legislative proceedings.

“The  public is, therefore, urged to disregard this fabricated report and refrain from sharing unverified information.”

For the records, when Kanu was first arrested and hauled before a Federal High Court and detained for months, it was Abaribe who took him on bail.
