The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has grieved over the tragic death of several athletes from Kano State who lost their lives in a fatal road accident on their way back from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, described the incident as a heartbreaking loss not just to Kano State, but to the entire Nigerian sports community.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the athletes, the government of Kano State, and indeed the wider Nigerian sports community. This is a deeply sorrowful moment.
In a message released on Saturday, the NGF Chairman called for prayers and support for the grieving families, urging Nigerians to join in seeking divine comfort for them.
“We ask Allah to repose the souls of the athletes and give succour to their families at this difficult moment.”
Kano State Commissioner of Youth and Sport Development, Mustapha Kwankwaso, who spoke on behalf of the State Government, also confirmed the incident in an official statement made available to newsmen, saying others that sustained injuries were responding to treatment.
Kwankwaso expressed sorrow over the unfortunate vehicle accident involving members of the Kano State contingent to the National Sports Festival – Gateway 2024 held in Ogun State.
The athletes were among the State’s contingent, who participated in the National Sports Festival, an event that brought together talents from across Nigeria to celebrate unity through sports.
“On behalf of the Kano State Government and the good people of the State, extended heartfelt sympathies to the affected athletes, officials, and their families.
“This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire sporting community in Kano.”
He described the incident as a moment of mourning for the entire state, adding that the government stands firmly with the affected individuals and will ensure they receive the necessary medical attention and support.
Kwankwaso also appreciated the efforts of first responders and medical personnel attending to the victims and assured the public that a full report of the incident will be received and appropriate actions taken.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government to the welfare and safety of all athletes and officials who represent the state in national and international sporting engagements.
