Ali Ndume, a ranking Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District has disclosed that Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio remains the preferred Candidate to vie for the Senate Presidency seat of the 10th Assembly, but not the anointed candidate.
Speaking on a Television Programme, ‘The Morning Show’ on Arise Television, Ndume said that Akpabio was only a preferred choice of the party which did not make him the automatic leader of the House, adding that the senators would still have to vote to determine the leader of the red chamber.
“I don’t think anointed is the right word to use. The APC has Akpabio as its preferred candidate, that would be a better word.
“Not anointed but preferred candidate. Because if it is anointed then it is fait accompli, which is not the case. We have to go into the chamber and vote, and it can go anywhere.
“Akpabio is going to be first among the equals as president of the senate. It is going to take the remaining 108 of us to restore integrity to the Senate,” he said.
It would be recalled that on Monday, 8th May, 2023, reports that Akpabio was nominated for Senate President, while the party nominated Abbas Tajudeen as the Speaker of the House of Representatives went viral.
The leadership of the Party is yet to comment on this development as the Senators from the South East have called on the President Elect to look into the direction of the region in choosing the next Senate President.
