Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs, has just disclosed why Dr Cairo Ojougboh , publicly swore that he would kill somebody on behalf of the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, even before Akpabio asks him to do so. Ordinarily, after that statement, the medical- doctor-turned politician should have been sacked from office. But in Nigeria, It is seen as a sign of loyalty to the Minister, and the Government in power.
In Nwaoboshi, William Shakespeare’s description of the reaction of a woman scorned, gets confirmation. “Help hath no fury than a woman scorned”, wrote the legendary Shakespeare.
Accused of alleged multiple misconduct and corruption in his chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission’s (NDDC) affairs, the Senator is fighting back.
His weapon: Reveal more eye-popping scandals in the Commission.
The latest from his stable, on Friday , is the monthly allowance the Acting Managing Director of the Interim Management Committee, IMC, of the NDDC, Prof, Kemebradikumo Pondei, takes home.
The plumpy Professor, who fainted when he was being grilled by the House ad hoc Committee invetigating alleged corruption and reckless spending in the NDDC, the Senator informs Nigerians, takes home, every month, the sum of N51.8m in allwances. This excludes his monthly salary.
As for Dr Ojougboh and his other IMC colleagues, each gets a paltry N18m, monthly, in allowances, according to Nwaoboshi. Pondei is used to big money. That explains why he looked everybody in the face, and said he spent the sum of over N1.3bn on palliatives for NDDC staff.
In the Ojougbo’s shoes, many would kill over Akpabio who recommended him into the juicy office.
Senator Nwaoboshi spoke on Friday, just as the Senate said it has discovered, and would probe more multi-billion Naira corruption allegations at the NDDC, not related to the N40bn alleged reckless spending its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions is already investigating.
The Committee Chairman, Senator Ayo Akinyelure, disclosed that Pondei would soon appear before his Committee, to be grilled over the recent scandal.
He said:” There is a petition that has just been sent to my Committee by the Leadership of the Senate.
“I received it on Tuesday. It is about the alleged fraudulent practices of the Acting Managing Director of the NDDC.”
Since the investigation of the corrupt activities at the NDDC, many Nigerians have been morbid with anger. Outraged, they have demanded for the sack of both the IMC board, and Akpabio.
On Friday, President Muhammadu Buhari, speaking for the first time on the alleged corruption at both the NDDC and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, said he regretted that those he trusted at both Concussions diappointed him.
The Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, a Commissioner of Police, has been facing a Presidential Panel over allegations bordering on misconduct and corruption. He is currently on suspension from office.
