The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has announced plans to establish a University in furtherance of the association’s educational programme.
The organization’s National Amirah, Mrs. Rafiah Idowu Sanni, disclosed this on Wednesday in Kaduna during a press conference to usher in its 40th-anniversary celebrations and an international conference.
She announced that the passion for education is driving the new projects, including a School of Nursing in Ibadan by the Oyo State chapter and ongoing plans for a FOMWAN University.
The press conference primarily outlined plans for FOMWAN’s International Conference with the theme: “Empowering Muslim Women: Climate Resilience, Sustainability, and Community Development – Celebrating FOMWAN’s Achievements.”
Mrs. Sanni explained that the theme reflects FOMWAN’s commitment to equipping women to meet future challenges by combining Islamic values with practical solutions to safeguard the environment and ensure inclusive development.
Celebrating four decades of work, the National Amirah highlighted FOMWAN’s foundational pillars, which include Da’awah (propagation of Islam), Education, Community Development, Healthcare Initiatives, and Capacity Building.
The conference, which begins its formal opening on Thursday, is expected to host delegates from the UK, the US, and various African nations to strengthen unity and foster global collaboration.
FOMWAN, the umbrella body for Muslim Women’s Organisations in Nigeria founded in 1985, is active in all 36 states and the FCT, with a presence in over 700 Local Government Areas.
It serves as a unified voice on matters concerning women, children, and their communities.
On the international scene, FOMWAN condemned the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, labelling it a “genocide” and called for global solidarity to end the bloodshed.
It particularly frowned at the “indiscriminate killings of women, children, and journalists, acts which violate every standard of humanity and international law.”
