Atiku Abubakar, the defeated Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the February 25 Presidential Election has disclosed that the battle for democracy in Nigeria has just started.
The PDP candidate was responding to the Supreme Court judgment on Friday that upheld the nomination of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kassim Shetima as presidential candidate and vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, respectively.
Atiku, however, appealed to his supporters to maintain calm as he awaits the ruling of the Election Petition Tribunal on whether he won the election or not.
The PDP has filed the suit to stop the swearing in of Tinubu and Shetima on May 29, citing the wrongful nomination of Shetima, twice by his party.
The apex court ruling has now cleared the coast for their inauguration.
Responding to the Supreme Court ruling earlier today, Atiku said on his verified social media platforms that the battle to rescue Nigeria and enthrone a new order has just started, saying he will not give up until the court rules in his favour.
Atiku lost the presidential election to Tinubu with over 1 million votes in the February election but has filed a petition at the Election Petition Tribunal challenging the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, returning Tinubu as the winner.
The former vice president is asking the court to declare him the winner instead.
Speaking on the apex court judgement Atiku said, “The Supreme Court’s dismissal of the case of the PDP is not a setback to my quest for justice. Our legal team are primed to robustly prove that the election of February 25 was fraudulent, did not comply with the constitutional requirements and the electoral guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission, and that the announced winner was not even qualified to contest the poll.
“The battle for democracy and the enthronement of a new order to spur growth and development in Nigeria is one to which I have committed my all and for which I am not ready to walk away at this point when our nation is at crossroads. We know that sooner than later, our esteemed Justices will make the pronouncement that will serve as a befitting requiem for mandate bandits.
“I urge my supporters to exercise patience and conduct themselves peaceably as we diligently conduct our litigation at the Presidential Election Tribunal Court. –
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has conferred Tinubu and Shetima with the highest national honours of GCFR and GCON ahead of their inauguration next Monday.
