One of the persons considered to be very close to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mamman Daura, has condemned the idea of rotational Presidency in Nigeria.
The President is Daura’s uncle. They are so close that when Buhari won the Presidency in 2015, he moved Daura into the Villa with his family, and allocated the famous House Seven to him and family to live in.
They vacated the house only when the President’s wife, First Lady Aisha, insisted they obey the President’s order to move into another Villa apartment and make way for her son, Yusuf, who was recuperating from a motorbike accident.
Daura is, also, allegedly a member of the famed “Cabal” who allegedly control the President, and run the country.
The President has always dismissed the notion, insisting: “I am in charge.”
Speaking on a BBC Hausa Service on Tuesday, Daura said he does not impose his opinion on the President, but said he visits, and puts across such opinions to him, but does not insist on them.
Daura: “Yes, I do visit him to greet him. I do give him advice, and if he asks, I advise him. But I don’t go there on my own, and insist I must do this or that. No. You don’t do that to the Government.”
Daura, also, took an exception to the idea of a rotational Presidency, and those insisting on Power shift.
He said it should not be. For him, the Presidency should go to the most competent person who wants it.
Daura:”This turn by turn, it was done once, it was done twice, it was done thrice. It is better for this country to be one. It should be for the most competent, and not for one who comes from somewhere”
The South-Eastern part of the country has been clamouring for a Nigerian Presidency of Igbo extraction, considering that it is the only region which has not produced a President, and, definitely, not because of a lack of very competent, qualified people.
Major political parties in Nigeria, had, for the sake of equity, justice and fairness, enshrined the rotational Presidency clause in their constitution. It will be seen if, and how, it plays out in 2023.
