Rights activist, Shehu Sani has appealed to the federal government to pull out from the Samoa Agreement it signed with the European Union, EU.
The former Senator representing Kaduna Central said the agreement contains “demonic conditions’ that are alien to the Nigerian culture and tradition.
The activists spoke on the heels of the controversy that have trailed the agreement signed by the Minister of Finance and Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu on behalf of the government on July 8, 2024 in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The magazine reported that not a few Nigerians are angry that the Tinubu administration signed the agreement which contains the protection of LGBTQ.
The contention is that the agreement is contrary to the Nigerian law, passed in 2018 outlawing LBGTQ rights in the country. The law was signed by former President Jonathan following its passage by the National Assembly.
The Tinubu administration however denied that the agreement contained the protection of homosexual rights, saying what it did is in the economic interest of the country.
Reacting, Sani stated that many Nigerians are not happy that the administration signed the agreement describing it to be “antithetical to our culture, religious faiths and values.”
He said;“African states should not accept loans or grants from any country, group of countries or international institutions that came with demonic conditions antithetical to our culture, religious faiths and values.
“All African countries including Nigeria who appended their signatures should go back and ‘unsign’ the Samoa agreement.”
