The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Saturday, July 26, 2025, constituted a Special Panel to carry out an unfettered inquest into the circumstances surrounding the Commissioner for Transportation, Ibrahim Namadi, signing bail bonds for a suspected notorious drug lord, Suleiman Danwanu.
The Source reports that Namadi had stood as a surety for Danwanu in a celebrated trial at a Federal High Court sitting in Kano after being granted bail by Justice M S Shuiabu on July 17, 2025.
Danwanu is being prosecuted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA over his alleged involvement in series of high profile drug related Offences.
He is widely believed to be one of the serial and notorious drug dealers in Kano.
Since signing the bail bond, the Commissioner has been on the spotlight, with not a few questioning his motives and relationship with the suspect.
Some of the critics have questioned his real motive for standing as a surety for someone whose business activities are generally considered to be utterly inimical to the health of Kano youths and image of the State, much so at a time the State Government is fighting hard to eradicate the menace of drug abuse among the youths of the State.
As at Friday, July 25, the attacks had become so intense as to draw a response from the embattled Commissioner who, expressed regret over the development.
He stated: “Accordingly, it is important to state clearly that my involvement in this matter was not based on any personal relationship or affiliation with the suspect but was done in good faith.
“The values I hold do not, in anyway, align with shielding criminal elements, undermining our justice system, or sabotaging efforts and hard work of the Government.
“I deeply regret this unfortunate incident and wish to assure the Government and good people of Kano State that I remain firmly committed to justice, accountability and rule of law.
“I will neither sabotage nor support any efforts that seeks to undermine the fight against drug abuse, thuggery, and other vices threatening the peace and stability of our dear State.”
But his seemingly contrite disposition was not enough to assuage frayed nerves as the authorities have insisted on getting to the root of the embarrassing development.
In a statement issued by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa his spokesperson on Saturday, Governor Yusuf was quoted as saying that the probe has become necessary in the face of widespread public outrage .
“To address the matter, Governor Yusuf has set up a Special Investigative Committee chaired by Barrister Aminu Hussain, his Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters.
“The Committee is mandated to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and recommend actions with immediate effect.
” Members of the Committee include Barr. Aminu Hussain, Chairman, Barr Hamza Haladu, Hamza Nuhu Dantani, Abdullahi Mahmoud Umar, Major General Sani Muhammad Rtd, Comrade Kabiru Said Dakata, and Hajia Bilkisu Maimota, Secretary .
Meanwhile , Governor Yusuf the statement further noted, has expressed serious concern over the alleged misconduct, while also reaffirming his administration’s commitment towards fighting drug abuse and other societal vices.
