For two Akwa Ibom  medical practitioners, their  quest to join in the now irresistible Japa syndrome appears has gone awary.

The Akwa Ibom State Government, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, declared a consultant radiologist Dr Uduakanasi Ita ,and Dr Mfonobong Bassey, a consultant haematologist wanted for exiting its services without fulfilling their pre-training agreement with the State.

Both medical professionals, hitherto attached to the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health, according to the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Ekem John, allegedly left their duty posts to seek greener pastures outside the country without first serving the State to compensate for the huge amount expended on their training.

At an interactive session with the Media in Uyo ,Dr John informed that the two runaway medical personnel flouted an existing agreement between the State and State-sponsored professionals to the effect that they must work to cover the money spent by the State Government on their respective trainings before transferring their services to other places .

According to the Commissioner, the State Government, through the Ministry of Health, will activate all processes to have the affected personnel sent back to Nigeria from whichever country they may be.

Dr John informed that plans are already afoot to track the medical doctors any where they may be and to also file a formal complaint letter to the country’s Medical and Dental Council for the purpose of sending them back to Nigeria.

“The state Government has repeatedly said that any medical personnel it trains is bound to serve the state to cover the cost of the training.before he/she  will be allowed to leave for greener pastures .

“The Ministry of  Health has declared them wanted .We will stop their salaries; track them until we find them .

“Any country they go to, we will go to the Medical and Dental Council of that country, and we will stop them .

“It is in their best interest to immediately report to the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health as we will not be held liable once the Medical and Dental Council begins to sit.

“Now that they have not been invited, and there is no issue, we ask that their families reach out to them to immediately report to the Ministry of Health”, the state Commissioner of Health stated

He vowed that the Akwa Ibom state authorities will not consent to any of their good hands leaving without compensating for the resources expended on them.

Dr John, therefore, urged the absconding medical personnel to return to their duty posts or in the alternative refund all the money spent on their training to avoid unpleasant consequences.
