Sixteen inmates escaped during a jailbreak in the early hours of Tuesday at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
The escapees, according to report, managed to breach the facility’s security, overpowering personnel on duty, and escaping custody.
Out of the 16 inmates that escaped, seven have been recaptured. Nine are still on the loose.
A statement by Umar Abubakar, Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Correctional Service, on Tuesday said five correctional officers were injured, two seriously, and are receiving medical attention.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has ordered a thorough investigation and directed an immediate search to recapture the fleeing inmates.
Nwakuche assured that no staff member found culpable in the escape will be spared.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service is working tirelessly to recapture the remaining inmates and has urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and report any suspicious movements or sightings to the nearest security formation
“The Service reassures the public of its commitment to public safety and the security of all custodial facilities nationwide.”
