He did not wait to be announced by anybody. Or for a Press Statement to be released, officially, by the Spokesman of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Emma Powerful.  But Simon Ekpa, a Lawyer, from Ebonyi State, who, reportedly, lives in Finland, announced himself via his Facebook page, as the stand-in for detained IPOB Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as the boss of Radio Biafra.

Radio Biafra is the engine room, the main tool, with which, and through which, Kanu reaches the world, heats up, and inspires his millions of Igbo followers who live in Nigeria and in the diaspora. It is a powerful, potent weapon in the struggle, by IPOB, for the freedom it is fighting to achieve for the Igbo nation of Nigeria.

In announcing himself to the position, he let it be known that he was mandated by Kanu to run Radio Biafra.

And he sounded tough.

Describing himself as a disciple of the IPOB leader, he said he was committed to the ideals of the group, and would pursue them with everything in him.

Like Kanu, he called Nigeria a Zoo, and promised a more aggressive agitation than before. “Now, the Zoo will understand the meaning of aggressive agitation”, he said.

Here is how he introduced himself and announced his appointment to run Radio Biafra:

“Our Leader, Mazi Nnamdi on this day, 8th of July 2021 directed that I, Simon Ekpa should start broadcasting from Radio Biafra with immediate effect.

“On this note, it is honour, and at the same time, a call to service, a call to serve Biafra nation and a call to serve lovers of freedom.

“This task, i will do with everything in me to see that we maintain the momentum and the legacy of our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB.

“I will serve with everything in me and i will double my effort in media, diplomacy and otherwise to the best interest of Biafra people.

“I am just a servant and i will serve.

Our leader will continue to lead this struggle from where ever he is.

“I am Simon Ekpa, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s disciple on Biafra restoration.

“NOW THE ZOO WILL UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF AGGRESSIVE AGITATION..!”

But some reports say some IPOB members have denied that Ekpa has been appointed by Kanu to run Radio Biafra. They allege that he usurped the opportunity of a call-in program on Radio Biafra to announce himself as Kanu’s stand-in. They ask why IPOB did not announce his appointment through the usual channel.

Yet, others point out he wouldn’t dare make announce himself if he was not mandated by Kanu. They say he risks being dealt with if he dared.

Even though Ekpa has not responded, he sounds hip, as well as excited and committed to the IPOB cause.

His profile which has made the rounds on WhatsApp reads rich.

Like Kanu, he is, allegedly, said to be a Prince in his community. His father is said to a Traditional Ruler.

Kanu was, unexpectedly, in a “coup”, re-arrested by the Nigerian Government in Kenya, a couple of weeks ago. On trial in Nigeria for an, alleged,  treasonable felony, and granted bail, he was forced to jump bail in 2017 when Nigerian soldiers invaded his father’s palace where he was staying. They allegedly killed a  number of people, including a family dog.

Kanu, a dual citizen of both Britain and Nigeria was never seen in public until 2019 when he surfaced in Israel. From there, he went back to Britain, and had aggressively been fighting for an Independent Biafra from there.

While the Nigerian Government says Kanu was intercepted, IPOB says its leader was Kidnapped, and is holding the Kenyan Government responsible for it.  His counsel revealed he was detained in Kenya by the Kenyan authorities for eight days under torture, before he was handed over to Nigeria.

IPOB  has since asked its members to boycott Kenyan products and Kenyan Airlines.

Kanu will appear in court for the continuation of his trial at a Federal High Court, Abuja, before the Hon. Justice Binta Nyako.

He is presently under the custody of the Directorate of State Security, DSS, on the orders of Justice Nyako.

His Counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, in a letter to the British High Commissioner in Nigeria, asked for consular assistance to his client, a request which has, allegedly, been granted.
