The Imo state Police Command, on Thursday, December 4, 2025, vehemently rejected claims suggesting that its anti-kidnapping unit has acquired the notorious image of a horror chamber.
The Source reports that the Unit, popular as “Tiger Base”, has, of recent, been widely perceived and condemned as a centre for vicious torture, dehumanization of innocent residents and citizens, organ harvesting/trafficking and extra-judicial killings.
Defeaning agitations against the alleged unprofessional activities of the operatives have gained traction within the social media space and other public arenas, with not a few calling for its disbandment and investigation of its activities with a view to punishing officers involved in alleged actrocious activities.
The Unit set up to lead the charge against abduction and other related criminal activities in Imo state has been widely and mockingly described by residents as “a slaughter house.”
However, in a statement issued on Thursday by Henry Okoye its spokesperson the Command while denying the allegations, described them as unfounded, misleading and mischievous.
This is as it strongly condemned renewed efforts by some vested interests to inpugn ethnic, religious and other premodial consideration into the operations of the Unit.
The Police statement insisted that no amount of blackmail and orchestrated smear campaign will diminish the remarkable inputs of the unit in the overall fight against criminal activities in the State.
“Tiger Base is a legitimate tactical formation of the Nigeria Police Force mandated to combat kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and other violent crimes.
“It is not an illegal detention facility or a slaughter house, and all suspects are handled in line with the law.
“The Unit has successfully dismantled several notorious kidnapping and armed robbery syndicates, contributing to the improved peace and stability that Imo residents enjoy today.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains a national institution where officers serve across all regions. It is regretable that attempts are being made to introduce ethnic sentiment into routine policing activities by way of targeting the Officer-in-Charge.
“Tiger Base operates in synergy with other security agencies and community policing structures, ensuring accountability and transparency.
“To strengthen oversight of the Unit, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, directed the immediate establishment of a Human Rights Desk within the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, to ensure transparency and safeguard the rights of all persons handled by the Unit” the Command stated.
Okoye insisted that the smear campaign against the Unit is being spearheaded and promoted by some criminal elements and their sponsors who are obviously not comfortable with the unwavering commitment of the operatives in combating their nefarious activities.
The Command while urging residents and the public to disregard any such misleading information and claims against the Unit warned that no amount of orchestrated antics will distract it from its avowed and constitutional duties , including adequately protecting lives and properties of residents.
