The Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has passed a damning verdict on the National Assembly.
The Senator, in an interview with the Dan’Uwa Rano TV, said the Federal Legislators have completely abdicated their oversight responsibilities, to become an appendage of the Executive arm of Government.
According to him, the core mandate of the Legislative arm-oversight functions has collapsed under the weight of excessive executive patronage.
He expressed serious concern over the inabilities of both Chambers of the National Assembly to live up to their expected functions of scrutinizing executive activities as well as keeping them on their toes.
Senator Ndume known for his criticisms of some of the polices of the All Progressive Congress
-led Government despite being a member of the ruling party decried the tendency by National Assembly to approve executive proposals and polices without due scrutiny.
“There is no oversight at the National Assembly anymore. We are doing nothing. The way the National Assembly is functioning amounts to nothing.
“And if you ask me, I don’t know which is better between its ( the National Assembly’s ) existence and non-existence. Yes, I am one of them. But we are not living up to our responsibilities”, Ndume stated.
However, he insisted that the National Assembly as uninspiring as it is not to be blamed for the woes of the country.
Rather, he largely blamed the problems besetting the country on the erosion of societal values.
According to him, the leadership of any society mirrors the character and values of that particular society.
Buttressing his position with religious teachings, Ndume maintained that the conditions of a people will not change until they change their ways.
“Allah says He does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within them, meaning if the society is righteous, their leaders tend to be righteous”, Ndume added.
