How Man 32, Strangled Girlfriend 39, Over Smartphone

The Akwa Ibom Police Command, on Monday March 17, 2025, said plans have been concluded to arraign a middle aged man, Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, over the gruesome murder of his girlfriend.

The Command informed  that Nelson, 32,  was  apprehended at a Church in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Capital  for, allegedly, murdering his girlfriend Emem Monday Effanga, 39, around February 6, 2025, at her apartment, over disagreement arising from her refusal to part with her mobile phone.

A statement from the spokesperson for the Police Command, Timfon  John DSP, said the suspect, allegedly, strangled the girlfriend after she had refused his request of using her mobile phone to take pictures for his birthday celebration.

“Sometime in February, 2025, the Command received a report that the deceased was found dead in her apartment under suspicious circumstances.

“Upon arrival at the scene, operatives observed visible marks of violence on her face and neck suggesting she had been strangled and beaten to death.

“The scene was processed, evidence documented, and the body was evacuated to the hospital, where she was confirmed clinically dead by medical personnel.

“The corpse was, thereafter, deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

” Following swift investigations, detectives traced the last person seen with the deceased to be Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, who had visited her residence on 6th February 2025, the morning of his birthday .

“The suspect was later tracked to a Church in Uyo, where he attempted to escape upon sighting Police Operatives but was swiftly pursued and apprehended” the Police stated.

According to the Police statement, during interrogation , Nelson  confessed to actually visiting the deceased on the said day (February 6,2025).

He also admitted that a struggle between the two had ensued following the refusal of the victim to give him her phone to take pictures for his birthday celebration on the social media.

“When she refused ,a struggle ensued ,during which he overpowered her, strangled her with his hands, and struck her head on the floor with fist blows ,leaving her unconscious before fleeing with her phone.

“One Itel Super Phone belonging to the deceased was recovered from him at the time of arrest”, the police stated.

The Command’s Spokesman added that a post-mortem examination has been conducted and the cause of death has been officially established by a pathologist.

“Consequently, the Command said the suspect will soon be arraigned in court.”

This is even as the  Commissioner of Police, CP, Baba Mohammed Azare, assured that justice will be served, while also urging the public to always remain vigilant and security conscious.
