The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that the move to impeach the Rivers State Speaker of the House Martins Amaewfule by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, was the reason the Assembly decided to impeach the Governor.
Wike made this revelation while speaking Tuesday night on Channel Television’s Politics Today anchored by Seun Okinbaloye.
Responding to a question on what the problem is between him and his successor in office as Governor, one who he was instrumental to installing as Governor, Wike said the problem began not from him, or with him. It began, he explained, when Governor Fubara, allegedly, planned to impeach Speaker Martins Amaewfule. The plot, he said boomeranged on the Governor.
The Minister explained that his problem with Fubara did not emanate from a disagreement over money or appointments, as he has never asked for any, but from the Governor’s inability to obey Court orders and observe the rule of law.
Wike’s submission puts a question mark to the long-held strong rumours that he fell out with Fubara over Fubara’s appointment of a Commissioner without Wike’s clearance. All the appointees to offices in Rivers State before the two fell apart, allegedly were done by Wike.
There were, also, allegations that the Governor was servicing Wike to the tune of N2.5bn every month. A source close to the Governor confirmed the monthly N2.5bn, but said it was never a problem between them. The problem, he disclosed, was the one appointment made by the Governor without Wike’s clearance.
But on speaking on Tuesday, Wike said such issues as money and appointments were never a problem between them as it never came up.
Currently, Rivers State has two Speakers of the House of Assembly – one, loyal to Wike, the other, loyal to Governor Fubara.
Recall that Fubara’s problem with his predecessor became public in 2023 when there was an aborted move to impeach the Governor.
