Nigeria has lost a star and a patriot. And so, the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, and the entire football community have once again been thrown into mourning.
Phillip Osondu, Nigeria’s Youth soccer sensation is dead. He died Friday in Belgium aged 48 years.
The former Nigerian footballer had gone to a hospital in Brussels, Belgium, where he lived to examine himself on Thursday. He felt unwell at work. Sadly, he died, shortly, at the hospital. Those around were in shock, this magazine gathered.
Osondu played regularly for Youth teams in Nigeria. But he never made it to the first team.
He was instrumental to the national team at Youth level, announcing itself to the world at the big stage.
In 1987, he participated in the FIFA World Under-16 tournament in Canada, and was inspired Nigeria to the finals The country lost on penalties to the Soviet Union.
He got the World Cup Golden Ball as best player of the tournament.
Osondu will be missed by his fans who loved his display with the ball, despite his size.
