Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and his Deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, have been criticized for keeping silent on the death of Sunshine Queens Football Club of Akure, Goalkeeper, Elizabeth Johnson.
A Group under the auspices of the Crusader for Peace and Good Governance, CPCG, criticized the Governor and his Deputy for naking no comment several days after the unfortunate and sad death of Johnson. She died Saturday, after training with other members of the team in preparation for their next match in the ongoing Nigeria Women Football League.
The State owned Club is competing in the Nigeria Women Football League, NWFL, and has not been doing badly in the League.
In a statement issued by the Coordinator of the CPCG, Ayo Laniyan, the group said the alleged silence of the Government, four days after the sudden death of the goalkeeper, was unfortunate and unfair.
It described the action of the Government as irresponsible, inhuman and discouraging to other players of the State Government’s football clubs .
In part, the statement reads, “The Crusader for Peace and Good Governance, condemned in totality , the action of the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, his Deputy, Mr Lucky Ayedatiwa, for not making any comment of condolence on death of Elizabeth Johnson of Sunshine Queens four days after the death of the player.
“The Sunshine Queens FC is owned by the government and it is expected of the state government or the Ondo State Football Agency to have made a comment of condolence to the family of the deceased. But up till now we have not heard anything from the Government, it is as if nothing has happened. This is irresponsible and inhuman.”
The Group however expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and the Sunshine Queens FC, praying to God to give the family the fortitude to bear the loss of their loved one.
Meanwhile, the State chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria has commiserated with the Sunshine Queens FC over the death its goalkeeper.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Chairman and the Secretary of the association, Wahab Bankole and Segun Giwa respectively.
The statement read, ” To hear of the sudden demise of such player is saddening to all members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria in Ondo State. We share the pains of the Ondo State Football Agency, particularly Sunshine Queens FC at this difficult time.
