Failure of the present administration to accede to demands by various ethic units making up Nigeria for self rule is one of the causes of insecurity in the country.
A soco-political group, Oodua Action Movement (OAM) which re-echoed the call for Yoruba nation autonomy, accused President Muhammadu Buhari of being a stumbling block in agitation for self rule among ethnic groups in Nigeria.
Urging the President to expedite action on the demand as year 2021 rolls in, the group noted that the demand for autonomy by Yoruba nation and others, would enable the regions to manage their resources and develop at their own pace.
In a statement signed by its Global Coordinator, Otunba Demola Edward, the group pointed out that Nigeria has been descending into crisis, since independence and has recently become a failed nation as an enduring solution to the myriads of problems lies in each of the nationalities.
According to the statement, there is need for self determination of each of the ethnic nationalities, as this would guarantee speedy and monumental development of the Regions.
“As year 2021 rolls in, we want President Muhammadu Buhari to begin the process for an autonomous Yoruba nation as a federating unit in Nigeria, as granted the South-West region upon independence in 1960.
“Our people have been under severe pressure by misrule, especially the recurring widespread insecurity and violent unrests.
“The repercussions of these have significant negative effects on the progress and stability of the Yoruba Nation.
“We the Yoruba people therefore demand an autonomous state where there will be justice, equity and progress.
“The Oodua Action Movement, on behalf of Yoruba worldwide, is relentlessly committed to this cause.
“We are prepared to use all legal and peaceful means within the confines of international laws and norms to actualise an autonomous nation for Yoruba people within Nigeria, or outside Nigeria, if the Federal government fails to honour our demand for self determination”.
