The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has publicly threatened the life of Peter Obi. He said Obi must never step his feet into Edo State. He said if Obi must, it has to be with an express approval from him. Obi needed to tell Okpebholo first, and wait fir approval Otherwise, he said, Obi would pay heavily for daring him.
Okpebholo said Obi should hold himself responsible if he dared disobey him. If Obi does, Okpebholo said he cannot guarantee Obi’s safety. To show how serious he is, Okpebholo added: “I’m not joking.’
Okpebholo did not say exactly what Obi did wrong. And why he banned Obi from Edo State. But he gave an inkling: Obi’s philanthropic activities. He wondered from where Obi is getting the money he is donating to good causes. And gave the impression that Obi’s visit to a school in Edo where he donated the sum of N15 million was responsible for the death of three people.
Said Okpebholo in a viral video where he addressed his supporters and threatened Obi’s life:
“This message is for the man who claims he has no ‘shishi’ (money).
“There is a new Sheriff in town. He cannot just come into Edo without informing me. His security will not be guaranteed. If anything happens to him here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking.”
Given Obi’s frequent contributions to charity, Church, health and educational institutions, Okpebholo wondered the source of Obi’s funds, and pointed out what he sees as the contradiction between Obi’s public statements and his financial contributions to institutions.
Okpebholo: He came the other day and gave out N15 million. A man who claims he has no money, where did he get that from?
“After he left, there was unrest in Benin, and three people lost their lives. That’s why I’m saying this: tell Obi not to step into Edo State without telling me first.”
Okpebholo is the second State Governor who has threatened Obi’s life in the past few months. The first was Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia who stopped Obi from visiting the Camps of Internally Displaced Persons in the his State.
Obi is a former two-term Governor of Anambra State and the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Presidential Election.
