The All Progressive Congress, APC has expressed the optimism that the defection of Taraba State Governor Kefas Agbu would herald a new dawn for the State and its citizens and residents alike.
The Party said the move which has generated so much interest and debate will serve to raise the bar of governance and deliver to the people the dividends of democracy.
The Source reports that Governor Agbu had on Saturday, November 15, 2025, while on an inspection visit to the Jolly Nyame stadium in Jalingo the state capital formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic party PDP, and subsequent defection to the APC.
According to him, the decision to join the ruling party at the centre was reached after wide consultations and due consideration for the interests of Taraba people.
He informed that the formal ceremony to receive him into the APC fold will be held on Wednesday November 19, at the main bowl of Jolly Nyame stadium.
“On the 19th of November, I will officially transition from the PDP to the APC. This movement is about the destiny of the people of Taraba state ,and we are expecting many visitors for the ceremony.
“My speech at the event will throw light on the circumstances surrounding my decision, and thereafter, allow residents to judge for themselves” Governor Agbu stated.
But at a media chat with the media on Sunday, the Taraba State Chairman of the APC Ibrahim Tukur El-Suldi, noted that although many narratives are being weaved around the decision of the Governor to change party affiliation, the defection, he insisted represents a rare opportunity to fast-track development and administrative transformation in the State.
According to him, the expectation is high that the Governor will perform better while in APC than he had done on the platform of the PDP.
“Contrary to public perception that the Governor’s performance under the PDP had been unimpressive, I strongly believe that he will do better under the APC.
“If he once had PDP blood in him, once he joins APC, a progressive party, we will infuse into him our progressive ideology and values. I assure you he will turn a new leaf and deliver even better governance” El-Suldi noted.
This is as the Chairman ruled out any significant changes in the structures and administrative framework of the party to accommodate the interests of the Governor and his supporters.
According to him, the structures of the party, at all levels, in the state will remain intact pending the expiry of the tenure of the present leadership in March 2026.
He insisted that the influx of people from other parties into the APC would strengthen the party rather than divide it as some people erroneously believe.
“From the state down to the ward level, the structures will remain intact until the official timetable for Congresses is released.
“That will be the appropriate.time for the Governor ,and other new members to build alliances and integrate fully into the party.
“We have our internal competitions, but that is the beauty of democracy. What is important is that APC remains.one strong and cohesive family”, the party chairman stated .
Although Governor Agbu had promised to reveal at the reception ground the real reasons behind his decision to abandon the PDP, a party that has been in control of the affairs of the state since 1999, not a few are of the strong belief that his near abysmal performance has served to alienate him from the power brokers in the State.
This magazine gathered that the entrenched political forces in the state who are said to be feeling hugely embarrassed and scandalized by the unimpressive record of the Governor, may have resolved to do away with him come 2027.
The Governor, who is also believed to be aware of the mindset of his estranged political godfathers may have perceived the APC and its national leader, President Bola Tinubu as the last hope to save his political future.
