Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has launched the distribution of 30,000 free school uniforms and sports equipment for senior secondary schools students, as a reaffirmation of government commitment to girl-child education.
The governor flagged off the initiative at the Government Girls Science Secondary School in Jahun.
Namadi explained that the programme was part of a broader agenda to ensure that girls not only enroll in school, but also complete their education.
He emphasized that educating the girl-child remains one of the most effective tools for societal transformation and economic growth.
“In addition to the uniforms, we are distributing sporting materials to promote physical development and extracurricular engagement in schools.”
He described education as a key pillar of his administration’s 12-point agenda and also highlighted targeted efforts to promote female participation in medical education.
According to him, this includes sponsoring bright girls to pursue medical-related courses, aligning with his goal to make girl-child education central to Jigawa’s development plans.
Namadi further noted the state’s continued investment in technical and vocational education, with the construction of workshops and the provision of tools in fields like welding, carpentry, and building construction, with school renovations, teacher training, and educational materials.
The Governor referenced the ₦67 billion “Jigawa Unite” project, a five-year partnership with a UK-based institution, aimed at integrating ICT into classrooms and providing continuous teacher development.
The project complements “Jigawa Compete,” a digital learning programme at the tertiary level.
Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof Isah Chamo, who also spoke at the event, detailed the scope of the distributed items, to include hundreds of balls, jerseys, athletic kits, and other sporting gear meant to boost physical education and sports development in secondary schools.
Chamo praised Governor Namadi’s investments in education, citing the government’s sponsorship of 137 female students at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi, and over 18,000 students for the JAMB examination.
He also highlighted the ₦100 million allocated to the Girls for Health (G4H) programme and further noted that 70 percent of beneficiaries under the state’s foreign scholarship programme are female, many of whom are currently studying medicine and health-related courses in countries like Cyprus and India.
