Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has literally told those condemning the continued State of Emergency in Rivers State to stop crying more than the bereaved.

President Bola Tinubu had, on March 18, 2025, suspended the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as well as his Deputy and Member of the House of Assembly from office for, according to him, an initial period of six months. To oversee the affairs in the State, the President appointed a Sole Administrator, Rtd. Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas.  Ibas has gone on the dismantle almost all democratic structures in the including the dissolution of Boards and Commissions.

The Emergency Rule is a product of the bitter political crisis which engulfed the State, no thanks to the bitter political struggle between Wike and Fubara, his political godson who he imposed as the Governor.

However, the two have made up and have rekindled their relationship for weeks now. But their making-up has not had any effect on the State of things in the State. It has changed nothing. Fubara and Co. are still on suspension and Ibas is still running the State.

This has led to a number of people, including some Stakeholders in the State, to ask why the State of Emergency still subsists since the sour relationship between Wike and Fubara which triggered the situation has normalised.

But on Monday, during his monthly Media chat, Wike wondered why anybody would worry about the continued State of Emergency in the State when the man who should worry supported it. He quoted Fubara as saying that the State of Emergency saved him from being impeached by the House of Assembly.

His words:

“The Governor has not come to tell you here that he’s not comfortable with what has happened. The Governor said if the president did not declare a state of emergency, then he would have been impeached.

“So, what does he tell you? He’s saying that I’m comfortable with what happened, so that we would all have made peace, and by that time, we will all work as a team.”

The State of Emergency would be ripe for lifting in September unless the President changes his mind and lifts it earlier than that.
