There was palpable tension in Abuja, the nation’s Capital, as Omoyele Sowore, other activists and protesters took to their heels as the Military fired teargas and live ammunition to disperse protesters demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.
The protest, which had gathered momentum in several parts of the Federal Capital Territory, saw a large turnout of activists, including Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow movement.
The protest which began as a peaceful demonstration soon turned chaotic when Armed Military personnel arrived at the scene.
The Armed Military Personnel had approached the protesters, urging them to leave the protest ground, but they refused, leading to the firing of teargas and live ammunition to disperse the protesters.
It was gathered through eyewitnesses that the protesters chanted solidarity songs and carried placards with several inscriptions such as “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now!”, “Justice for All,” and “Freedom Is Not a Crime”, before the military began firing teargas canisters to disperse the crowd.
It was gathered that situation escalated when some officers allegedly fired live bullets into the air, forcing several demonstrators, including Sowore, to flee for safety.
Videos of the incident has gone vieal on various social media platforms, as the protesters scampered in different directions amid thick clouds of teargas for safety.
Sowore was said to have narrowly escaped the chaos, condemned the use of force against peaceful protesters, describing it as “an act of tyranny” and “a reflection of the government’s intolerance to dissent.”
He however vowed that the struggle for freedom and justice for Nnamdi Kanu would continue despite intimidation.
It was gathered that some of the protesters have been arrested by the Military, though the exact number remains of the arrested protesters could not be ascertained as at the filing in of this report.
