Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, a former Foreign Affairs Minister has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to get on the wrong side of new President Donald Trump of the United States of America.
Akinyemi gave the warning on Monday, on Channels Television programme, barely hours after the US leader took the oath of office as the country’s 47th President.
Following his taking office yesterday, the US President had taken some actions, including issuing 100 Executive Orders, which many insist will affect global politics.
Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Nigeria’s Tax Reform committee has warned that Trump’s policies are capable of disrupting global trade and tax system.
Trump, the magazine reports, declared yesterday that his plan is to Make America Great Again, MAGA, a remark that has sent shock waves across the world.
Following Trump’s past remarks on Africa, including describing countries in the continent as ‘shithole countries” not a few foreign affairs analysts said his policy, in his second coming as US Leader will not favour Africa.
They insist that Trump hardly fostered diplomatic relations with African nations during his First Term in office, and the situation may not be different this time around.
According to renowned diplomat Akinyemi, President Tinubu should try to avoid the US leader at all cost no matter how negative his policies towards the country, describing Trump as a ‘bully’ who will not spare anything to achieve his aim.
“If I were President Tinubu, I would try to steer clear of antagonising him because there is nothing a bully likes better than taking on people who are not strong enough to resist him,” the diplomat said.
Adding that, “You know there is that African proverb that if you are not strong enough to take on a bully and you take him on, you are just even going to suffer more for it.”
The Professor said the US leader will soon find out that international diplomacy is not as easy as he thinks, as some of those that will be affected by his negative policies will begin to push back.
