A prominent indigene of Ekiti state and a renowned scholar, Akin Osuntokun, has emerged as a director general of the Labour Party, (LP) presidential campaign Organization.
The Labour Party appointed the former Political Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo, as a successor to Dr Doyin Okupe who resigned last week.
This was announced by the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, in Abuja, on Tuesday.
He said the decision was reached after wide consultations with party stakeholders across board.
Okupe had stepped down from his position as the director-general of the Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign council after his conviction by an Abuja Court for money laundering.
He announced his resignation in a letter addressed to Peter Obi, LP presidential candidate, and dated December 20, 2022.
At a sitting on Monday at the federal high court in Abuja, Ijeoma Ojukwu, the presiding judge, sentenced Okupe to two years imprisonment after he was found guilty of 26 out of a 59-count charge preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
He was, however, given the option to pay a N500,000 fine on each of the counts, totalling N13 million.
Okupe paid the fine shortly after the sentencing.
