FG Inaugurates Committee To Enforce LG Autonomy

To ensure strict compliance with the Supreme Court Judgement on local governments’ autonomy, the Federal Government has inaugurated a committee to enforce the decision.

The Committee, an inter- ministerial one, has 10 members with Secretary to Government of the Federation, (SGF)as chairman.

In a statement on Tuesday, Segun Imohiosen Director, Information & Public Relations in SGF office explained that the Inter-Ministerial Committee is saddled with the task to enforce Supreme Court Judgement On Local Governments Autonomy

The SGF, George Akume, performed the inauguration ceremony on Abuja.

The Supreme Court had on 11th July, 2024, delivered the judgement, granting financial autonomy to Local Governments in Nigeria.

Other members of the committee are :Minister of Finance & Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Attorney General of the Federation & Minister of Justice, and Minister of Budget & Economic Planning

It also has Accountant General of the Federation, Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance, Chairman, Revenue Mobilization Allocation & Fiscal Commission, Representative of State Governors and Representative of Local Governments.

The committee’s primary goal is to ensure that local governments are granted full autonomy, allowing them to function effectively without interference from state governments.

According to the statement, this move is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to give appropriate implementation to the provisions of the Constitution, which recognizes Local Governments as the third tier of government.”
