The Federal Executive Council, (FEC) has renamed the University of Abuja, (UNIABUJA) after former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
The institution will henceforth be known as Yakubu Gowon University.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris announced the name change shortly after the last Federal Executive Council meeting for the year 2024, chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
He explained that the decision was taken in recognition of the enormous contribution of Gowon to nation building.
The Minister said that the decision will be forwarded to the National Assembly for ratification.
General Gowon GCFR, born on 19 October 1934, is a former Head of State and statesman, who led the Federal military government war efforts during the Nigeria’s civil war.
Gowon delivered the famous “no victor, no vanquished” speech at the war’s end to promote healing and reconciliation.
He recently celebrated his 90th birthday.
