As political parties that are participating in the June Governorship election in Ekiti state take steps to submit names of Deputy Governorship candidates, the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) is in dilemma over a choice.
The parties and their candidates are expected to submit the names by Friday, 25th to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The candidate of PDP, Bisi Kolawole, is from Central Senatorial District, and is expected to pick his running mate from either North or South Senatorial District.
The State Leadership of PDP and Kolawole, the annoited candidate of former Governor Ayodele Fayose, agreed and picked the State Secretary of the Party, Mrs Funmilayo Ogun for the position.
However, in a letter dated 24th February, 2022, addressed to National Chairman, Dr Iyorcha Ayu, the nominee rejected the offer.
Mrs Ogun was a former Commissioner for works in Governor Fayose’s administration.
Her letter of rejection states that “This is to formally inform you that I am not unaware of my nomination by Ekiti stake holders for the position of Deputy Governorship candidate in the 18th June, 2022 Governorship election.
“Not minding their good intention, I formally write to reject the nomination for personal reasons.
“However, I personally appreciate the recognition and assure that no effort will be spared at ensuring our victory at the election.
“The candidate can therefore be approached for a fresh nomination. Thanks and best regards.”
It was gathered that Mrs Ogun, from the Southern Senatorial District turned down the offer mainly because of an envisaged defeat of the PDP in the election and the financial implications of her acceptance.
A number of PDP members, in anger over the outcome of the Primary Election, are pledging support for the APC candidate.
A couple of days ago, many associates of Senator Biodun Olujimi, a Governorship aspirant who pulled out in protest, declared support for the APC candidate.
