Now that the January 29, 2022 date which was the last day for Political Parties to conduct Primaries to pick their Candidates for the June Governorship election set by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) has lapsed, nine parties have signified participation in the election.
The parties include People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), All Progressive Congress, (APC), Action Democratic Congress, (ADC), Labour Party, (LP), Young Progressive Party,(YPP) and Accord Party,(AP).
Others are African Action Congress, (AAC), Social Democratic Party,(SDP) and People’s Redemption Party,(PRP).
The list contains names of Political parties which conducted their primaries before the stipulated date by the INEC.
There are indications, however, that two parties are still likely to join the list as INEC in its schedule of programme still allows them up till February 25 to withdraw or replace their candidates.
INEC has vowed not to accept candidates from political parties whose primary election was not supervised by officials of the Commission.
The Commission has, therefore, rejected the outcome of the Primary Election conducted by the Boot Party (BP) to elect its candidate for the Ekiti governorship election.
The Commission said the party will not nominate a candidate for the June 18 governorship election.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who disclosed the position of the electoral umpire at the Commission’s Headquarters, in Abuja, observed that the Party’s Governorship primary was not monitored by INEC.
“From our field report, the Boot Party (BP), did not hold its primary at any venue known to, and monitored by the Commission.
Consequently, we do not expect the party to nominate a candidate for the Ekiti State governorship election.”
One of the Aspirants that lost out in the PDP primary election, Segun Oni is still being rumoured to be contemplating to pursue his ambition using the All Progressive Grand Alliance, (APGA) as a platform.
Investigations revealed that already, some of his supporters are already decked in APGA attires with social media awash with the former governor’s next line of action.
With an increase in the number of participating parties, all the three senatorial districts of the state have candidates participating in the election.
The Candidates of the APC, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, BAO and PDP, Hon. Bisi Kolawole, are from the Central Senatorial District.
