As the 2024 Edo State Governorship election approaches, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, and Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun have assured of hitch free poll.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held on Wednesday, in Benin City, Prof Yakubu outlined the extensive preparations that have been made to ensure a credible and peaceful election assuring stakeholders of the commission’s preparedness.
Yakubu welcomed the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, and other key stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of their roles in the electoral process.
He noted that the tradition of convening a stakeholders’ meeting on the eve of major off-cycle governorship elections serves as a platform to interact with political parties, candidates, election observers, and the media.
The meeting, he explained, was crucial for addressing concerns and ensuring that all parties are aligned on the preparations and security measures in place for the upcoming election.
Yakubu highlighted that INEC’s preparations for the Edo Governorship election began over a year ago with the release of the election timetable and schedule of activities.
Out of the 13 statutory activities listed, he confirmed that 11 have been successfully completed, with only the last day of campaign activities and the election day itself remaining.
He reassured stakeholders that INEC is fully prepared for the election day, scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.
The INEC Chairman also provided updates on the final list of candidates, noting two court-ordered adjustments.
These include the replacement of the Labour Party’s running mate and the inclusion of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) on the ballot.
A total of 18 political parties are now set to participate in the election. Prof Yakubu expressed confidence in the transparency of the process, with all relevant information being made available to the public and political parties.
Addressing the security concerns raised by stakeholders, Professor Yakubu stated that the commission has been in close communication with security agencies to ensure the safety of voters, election officials, and materials.
The Chairman also assured that all necessary logistical arrangements, including the deployment of election duty vehicle stickers and the accreditation of observers and media personnel, have been finalized.
Yakubu emphasized the importance of technology in safeguarding the credibility of the election, particularly through the deployment of BVAS machines for voter accreditation and result upload.
He announced that signing of Peace Accord is scheduled for Thursday, and will be presided over by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, which is intended to reinforce the commitment of all parties to a peaceful electoral process.
