The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had a shock on Monday when one of its ardent faithfuls publicly announced he would campaign against the party in the forthcoming Edo Governorship election.
Kassim Afegbua, one of the party’s spokespersons during the ill-fated 2019 Presidential election said he would campaign against the PDP candidate, Godwin Obaseki, and vote against him.
Speaking on Channels Television programme, Politics Today, on Monday, anchored by Seun Okinbaloye, Afegbua said he was not afraid of the consequences. He does not mind being accused of anti-party activities because, according to him, the party went against every grain of principles and justice.
Afegbua says it was an injustice for the party to have given its ticket to a stranger. He is angry with his party over the governorship ticket to Obaseki without a care for the feelings of those who had been in the party, working for the party, and contributing to its progress.
He expressed shock that the party not only gave its ticket to Obaseki, it also allowed him to pick Philip Shaibu as his running mate.
Shaibu is the current Deputy Governor of Deputy Governor.
Agegbua said he found it difficult that because of money, the PDP sold itself cheap, and brought in Obaseki and Shaibu after screening had closed.
He said “What have those who kept the party gained? All they would have done was to, at least, allow the party pick a running mate from among its faithfuls. Instead, everything was given to Obaseki.”
He hinted that the only reason they profer for selling the party cheap is money. “All they say is that Obaseki has the financial muscle to sponsor the campaign, and suddenly, they dump the three aspirants earlier screened.”
Obaseki and his Deputy resigned from the APC after he was disqalified from running for a second term in office on its platform. He defected to the PDP, followed by his deputy.
The PDP managed to persuade its former already screened three candidates to step down, and gave the duo the ticket to fly its flag in the upcoming Governorship election.
