Popular socialite Obi Iyiegbu, aka Obi Cubana has pushed back at those who says he may be dealing in hard drugs, following his interrogation by the NDLEA on Wednesday.
Recall that the businessman was also quizzed last year by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Cubana who shot into limelight, last year, after he threw a massive party for his late mum in Oba, Anambra state was guest of the Gen. Buba Marwa (retd)-led anti-narcotic agency for allegedly receiving funds from drug dealers. He was later released and is deemed to appear on a later date for further questioning.
But in what could be regarded as his response to the suggestion that he fronts for drug traders, the night club operator, said in his social media page that he’s a legitimate businessman and has never been involved in shady business.
In a post on his page, on Thursday, he revealed that he established his first club in Abuja 15 years ago and has been involved in other businesses.
According to him, his first night club was, “established 13th October 2006, 16 years and still standing. If you never come here that year for Abuja, you never start. This year: showcasing what we do for a living.”
The popularity of the Cubana has soared after the well-attended party he threw for his late mum last year, with the debate over his source of wealth also becoming controversial.
Among other things, the businessman has recently built a church in his home town as part of his philanthropy. In response to suggestions that his source of wealth is not clean, Cubana said last year that he built his fortunes through hard work.
He was supported by Aisha Yesufu, a human rights activist who said Cubana and his friends may have actually made their fortunes legitimately.
Yesufu said “I want to talk about what happened in Nigeria recently that set everyone’s tongue wagging and that is the burial of someone known as Obi Cubana at Oba, Anambra State.
“A lot of people were like ‘oh no! How can this happen? It’s not their money. There was such a temptatious display of money.
“I’ve listened to different comments and watched many videos and there was a money fight just like you have food fight right? And the musicians were throwing bundles of money at each other.
“And somehow, some people were outraged, some people liked it, some did not bother about it but I think many people do not understand that the money is in business.
“Most times when you see people who have money it’s either the person has done money ritual. I saw a brief of one of the videos Obi Cubana did and he was like, the native doctor that wants to do ritual for you, his child is fetching water from the stream. He has no money.
“The pastor or Imam telling you they would help you get money, how much do they have? All these things come from hard works, smart works, networking, constantly learning and being prudent, delayed gratification.”
