The Borno State Police Command has dubbed the Spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Dino Melaye, a liar.
Reports had broken out on Wednesday that the convoy of the PDP Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, came under heavy attack in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State. According to the reports, thugs had swooped on Atiku’s convoy on his way to the Campaign venue after he and his entourage paid a courtesy call on the Shehu of Borno in his Palace. A number of people, it was said, were injured.
The report grew wings when Melaye confirmed it, and disclosed that 74 supporters of Atiku have been hospitalised while over 10 vehicles on the convoy were destroyed.
Dino said all kinds of dangerous weapons were used to attack the convoy all in a bid to stop the PDP Presidential rally in the State. He said nothing ever could stop the rally and put the blame on the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the State. Dino claimed the alleged thugs were over 100 in number.
But the Borno State Police Command has put a lie to Melaye’s story. The Command said nothing could be further from the truth as there was no such attack on Atiku’s motorcade.
Addressing the Press on Wednesday, the Police Command’s Spokesperson, ASP Sani Shatanbaya, said the story of the attack was false. He said that Atiku had a free rally in Maiduguri without any such incident.
He said that the Commissioner of Police in the State, accompanied Atiku to the Emir’s palace, and was present at the Campaign venue to see to a trouble-free event.
He said: “The news of the attack on Atiku Abubakar’s convoy was not only fake but a false and mischievous attempt at confusing Nigerians.
“There was no attack on Atiku’s convoy.”
But the Police later paraded one Musa Abbas, 32, who the Command accused of “attempting to disrupt the escort of the Presidential candidate on the way to the Airport. He was arrested with a stone, and on sighting the Police, he ran into a Church where he was arrested. The Police is hunting for his accomplices.”
The Borno State Chairman of the APC, Ali Dalori, said he was disappointed in Dino Melaye as there was no such attack on Atiku’s convoy in the State.
