The Nigerian Armed Forces, NAF, has described as false reports that it has been approached to truncate the country’s democratic process.
No request has been made from any quarters to the military to stage a coup de tat, the Defence Headquarters, DHQ said on Sunday in a statement.
The DHQ had on Friday issued a statement denying reports that the issue of welfare is causing tension among the ranks and file who are allegedly demanding a takeover of government.
According to a statement issued yesterday by the Director, of Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, the military never received any request to take over the government in the country, adding that its earlier statement was twisted.
Gusau said security agencies have already launched a manhunt for those behind the false report, saying they will be tracked down and punished.
According to him, those behind the mischievous report do not wish the country well and therefore must be disregarded.
The statement read, “The Defence Headquarters is concerned about false and disturbing social media reports twisted to state that the Armed Forces of Nigeria received a request to effect a change of leadership in the country.
“We want to use this opportunity to reiterate that the Armed Forces of Nigeria never received nor made such a declaration at any time to anyone or any group.
“We believe this statement came from those who do not wish the nation well. It is surely the wicked imagination of a few who are not happy with the progress and well-being of our dear country.
“The AFN is very comfortable with democracy and remains loyal to the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The military is always willing and ready to defend the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“We urge those peddling such falsehood to desist from such or face the law. The Military and indeed other security agencies are on the lookout for these agents of doom. We must all join hands to strengthen our democracy.”
Recall that some people have recently suggested a disquiet in the nation’s armed forces following the resignation of some personnel, which they blamed on the poor treatment of troops.
The DHQ had countered the allegation saying the Armed forces is like any other public office where retirement is voluntary.
