The Anambra State Police authorities have assured that concerted efforts are underway to track down a middle aged woman who allegedly capitalized on the physical challenges of an elderly woman to clear her bank account.
In a viral video clip released Thursday December, 19, 2024, the lady was captured by a bank CCTV, swapping an ATM Card of an elderly, visually-impaired customer, at a transaction point in Nnewi Anambra State.
According to reports, the elderly visually- impaired widow had gone to the ATM point to carry out some transactions, but as usual was experiencing difficulties owing to her eye condition.
It was at this point that a middle aged lady offered to help her. Innocently, the elderly widow gave out her ATM card and the pin number.
But ,as it turned out ,the young lady had some other funny ideas ,as she was seen in the video clip swapping the elderly woman’s card with another.
Minutes after, the “good Samaritan act”, the blind woman began to receive a torrent of bank debit transaction alerts on her mobile phone.
The bubble was said to have burst, on Tuesday December 17, when the elderly widow stormed her bank, to lodge a complaint about the multiple alerts that she received.
It was at that point, that a CCTV footage released by her bankers showed the devilish swapping of her ATM card by the young lady the offered to assist her.
The avalanche of alerts, received ,were later confirmed to be the withdrawal of about N2 million by the young lady from the account of her elderly victim.
In the video clip, the swindling lady is captured spotting red top and black trousers and, was clearly seen exchanging the blind woman’s original ATM card.
While narrating her ordeal on Thursday, the victim said she was approached by the young lady with an offer to help her carry out her transactions.
” I went to the ATM to withdraw some cash ,but couldn’t operate the machine properly because of my condition.
“A lady standing nearby offered to help me .She took my card ,got my pin and swapped it with an expired one.
“I was unaware of what had happened until I started receiving debit alerts on my phone. Within minutes, she had withdrawn over N2 million from my account.
“This is such a devastating experience, especially at a time when I desperately need funds to make some transactions”,the victim stated.
Although at the time of reporting her bankers had not officially reacted to the development, a source in the bank, however, informed that the bank’s CCTV clearly captured the young lady swapping the woman’s ATM card .
“The CCTV clearly shows the suspect swapping the victim’s ATM card and proceeding to another ATM to withdraw the money. This transaction is extremely wicked.”
The Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, also, stated that investigations have commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the act.
He informed that the Commissioner of Police CP Aderemi Adeoye has directed that nothing should be spared in the efforts to hunt down the person involved.
However, a few people have expressed surprise that as much as the sum of two million Naira was allegedly stolen as ATMs do not dispense more than N40, 000 per daily in a transaction.
