Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has ordered the immediate suspension of the Commissioner for Health, Yanusa Isma’il.
The decision follows the Governor’s directive for the Commissioner to provide satisfactory justification against allegations of negligence of duty and disregard for his official mandate.
This directive is coming days after a journalist in Kebbi State, Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa, was detained for releasing a video showing the poor conditions at Kangiwa General Hospital, Kebbi.
Critics condemned the detention, accusing State Authorities of attempting to silence reporting, rather than address the systemic neglect highlighted by the video.
According to Governor Idris, the Health Commissioner stands suspended from office until further notice.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media, depicted patients lying on bare metal beds without mattresses, sparking public outrage and renewed scrutiny of the State’s healthcare system.
Dan Bello, a human rights advocate, stated on X in a video that the arrest, reportedly ordered by Governor Nasiru Idris, represent “a new wave of tyranny ” and called for Kangiwa’s immediate release.
Governor Idris, who was earlier accused of ordering the detention, was reported to have ordered the release of the Journalist on Friday and approved payment of compensation for his detention.
