Finally, the wait has ended. The anxiety too. For, finally, the body of Anambra State Assembly Member, Honourable Justice Azuka has been recovered in a bad state. It was already in decomposed state.
The Honourable Member was abducted on December 24, 2024, as he was heading home for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
At the time of his abduction, Azuka was the representative of Onitsha North Constituency 1 in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
His abduction took place as he was returning home along the Ugwunaobankpa Road, Inland Town, Onitsha.
He was a chieftain of the Labour Party, LP, who got back his mandate when a Court sacked the Douglas Egbuna of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had earlier declared the winner of the 2023 election.
His kidnap was swift, just a few minutes, according to reports. And the kidnappers never made contacts with anybody until his body was recovered. The car he drove at the time of his abduction was recovered on December 26, two days after the tragic
The State Police Command, while not disclosing the circumstances under which his body was recovered, or the arrest of the suspects, confirmed the recovery and said Police Operatives were still at the scene of recovery.
However, an unnamed Security source has been quoted by Saharareporters as saying that those responsible for his abduction and eventual tragic end, have been arrested.
“We have arrested the culprits that kidnapped and killed him. They were arrested very late last (Wednesday) night and they now went and showed the security men where they dumped the corpse.
“It is sad and tragic. What a huge loss. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen. Our condolences and heart-felt sympathy to his family, traditional ruler of Onitsha, Obi of Onitsha, Dr Alfred Achebe and the entire people of Onitsha North Constituency 1.
“This highlights the ongoing security issues in Anambra State, where a sitting lawmaker was abducted in the heart of Onitsha.
“Two nights ago, on Tuesday, kidnappers had a field day along Awka Road in the centre of Onitsha, firing several gunshots during an attempted abduction.”
Incidentally, Azuka’s body was recovered a couple of days after Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono-Itam was removed from office and replaced. Under him, the security situation in Anambra State descended to the pit of hell.
