CSOs Läment Rëprisal Attack By Soldiers On Aba Rësidents Over Kïllïng Of Five Soldiers, Pëtition Governor Otti

A Coalition of Civil Society Groups under the aegis of Abia Civil Society Network, ACSON, have lamented the continued attack on residents of Aba in Abia State by Soldiers following the killing of five Soldiers on May 30, 2024, by unknown gunmen. They have, therefore, petitioned Governor Alex Otti to wade into the issue as a matter of urgency.

Five Soldiers were killed at Obikabia junction, Ogbor Hill, Aba, which,  has led to, allegedly, a reprisal attack by Soldiers on residents.

In a letter titled; Urgent need to address ongoing reprisal attacks and release detained citizens in Aba, signed by Barr. Amaka Biachi, Cassius Ukwugbe and Okoye, Chuka Peter; the CSOs stated that the reprisal attacks have have led to widespread panic, destruction of property, and unwarranted arrests of innocent civilians in Aba and environs.

The group also called for the release of all residents who were arrested without evidence of committing any offence, stressing that their continued detention is a breach of their fundamental human rights which would fuel animosity and distrust between the communities and Security Forces.

“We, the Abia Civil Society Network (ACSON), an umbrella body of civil rights and pro-democracy groups in Abia State, would like to express our sincere appreciation to you for your prompt attention to the recent tragic incident which that took place on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at Obikabia Junction, leading to the painful loss of 5 soldiers on active service.

“In strong terms, we condemn the said dastardly act in its entirety and commend the support you have rendered thus far to the Nigerian Army, the families of the deceased, and the promises made to console the aforesaid aggrieved and grieving parties.

“ However, we are compelled to bring to your urgent attention the ongoing reprisal attacks on innocent citizens of Aba and the need for the immediate release of those unjustly detained, including vulnerable women and underage teenagers. Reports across various media platforms indicated that following the unfortunate killing of soldiers in Obikabia junction military checkpoint, Ogbor Hill, there have been severe retaliatory actions by the military.

“These actions have led to widespread panic, destruction of property, and unwarranted arrests of innocent civilians, in.

“We acknowledge the complexity and sensitivity surrounding the tragic loss of our military personnel in the said incident. However, collective punishment of the community is neither a just nor an effective response. The indiscriminate arrests and other violence-related incidents have exacerbated fear and instability within our commercial city, hence undermining the very fabric of community trust and safety that your administration seeks to uphold.

“ We call for the cessation of reprisal attacks and any ongoing military operation that target civilians and ensure that any necessary security measures are conducted with strict adherence to human rights standards.

“ Expedite the release of all citizens including men, women and defenceless teenagers, who have been arrested since the ugly incident took place without substantial evidence of wrongdoing. Their continued detention only serves to fuel animosity and distrust between the community and security forces”.

The Group also called on the Governor to set up an independent committee in collaboration with the Security Agencies to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack and the military response and set up an independent committee to investigate the incidents.

“Set up an independent committee in collaboration with relevant security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the raised issue and the subsequent military response. Transparency in this process is crucial to restoring public confidence.

“ Facilitate dialogue between community leaders, civil society actors, security agencies, and government officials to foster mutual understanding and cooperation. Providing psychological and material support to affected families will also aid in the community’s healing process.

“Reiterate and reinforce the government’s commitment to upholding the human rights of all citizens, ensuring that security measures in place do not infringe upon these rights.

“ We trust that your administration, known for its dedication to peace and justice, will take swift and decisive action to address these concerns.

“The well-being and safety of the citizens of Aba, and indeed all of Abia State, depend on the prompt and humane resolution of the raised issue.”
