Covid-19: CAF Postpones Africa Women’s Championship Till 2022 |The Source

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has announced that the 2020 African Women Cup of Nations, AWCON, earlier slated for October 2020, has been cancelled.

The African Football Body said the cancellation of the Female tournament was due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 Pandemic outbreak which has  crippled football activities.

CAF has, however, said the tournament will now hold in July 2022, the same year with the Men African Cup of Nations Championship scheduled to also hold in January 2022, as against January 2021 due to the Pandemic.

It will be recalled that the World Soccer Governing Body, Federation International of Football Association, FIFA, also cancelled the Under-17 and Under-20 Female World Cups due to the Pandemic.

With this development, the Super Falcons of Nigeria will have to wait for another four years to defend the AWCON title it won in 2018.

The Super Falcons has won the AWCON trophy Nine times since the competition debuted in 1998.
