The Honorable Binta Nyako of an Abuja Federal High Court has absolved the leader of the separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, of culpability in eight of the 15- count charges of terrorism proffered against him by the Federal government.
Justice Binta Nyako struck out eight of the 15 counts against Kanu while ruling on the preliminary objection raised by Kanu through his counsel, Mike Ozhekhome (SAN) demanding the judge strikes out all charges against him.
“I have read the counts, and counts 6,7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 have not disclosed any offence against the defendant.
“‘Counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 show some allegations. The court shall proceed to try the defendant on those counts,” Justice Nyako said.
One of the thorny issues was the issue of the proscription of IPOB. On this, Justice Nyako held that because the case was pending before the appeal court, the order proscribing the organisation subsists until it is vacated.
Meanwhile, there was a sit- at -home in South east to mark Kanu’s Court appearance.
This magazine learnt that there was a high level of compliance to the order.
